A large-scale rescue and recovery effort is currently in progress in the Caribbean region for two missing boats loaded with aid cargo en route from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Military Search and Rescue Missions Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting a minimum of nine personnel, according to a navy statement.

The boats had been projected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their safe arrival, authorities reported.

Context of Relief to the Island

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island grapples with multiple power outages across the country.

"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and both vessels are outfitted with appropriate safety equipment and emergency beacons," a representative involved in the effort commented.

The nine crew members are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is working closely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Aid Delivery

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and officially received a different ship that had transported a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the nation.

That ship, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" in reference to the yacht in which Castro landed in Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, drugs, baby formula, bikes and food.

Wider International Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led attempts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a energy blockade on the country was initiated.

The United Nations have since highlighted ""critical" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50,000 surgeries called off in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Diplomatic tensions have been ramped up in recent months, with comments from several representatives underscoring the delicate state of bilateral relations.

Reacting to recent statements, a prominent Cuban official insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that initial phases of talks were initiated, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The Mexican navy said it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its command to locate the boats and secure the safety of the people on board.

To date, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
