The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry says farewell to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
