Can You Crack It? The Overlooked Dutch Creation That Shaped the Contemporary Globe
One can find numerous candidates for the title of “planet’s greatest innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.
As per a new book, however, that honor should go to the mechanised timber mill invented by Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, building a simple trading ship necessitated approximately ten lumberjacks laboring over three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, an identical amount of cut lumber could be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Owing to this rapid mechanical saw, which turned logs to boards using almost no manual labor, the Dutch were able to construct ships more quickly compared to any other nation, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Dutch naval, financial as well as artistic dominance across Europe and the world.
The First Genuine Industrial Device
The inventor's lumber mill, contends Dávila, was “mankind’s initial authentic industrial apparatus.” A windmill turned a gear. One component transformed its rotary movement into vertical action to power the saw. A separate mechanism changed that same rotary motion into a sideway’s movement feeding the log toward the blade. A ratchet system moved the wood ahead one precise increment per cycle.
“Each element was modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to integrate these parts so they acted in a precisely synchronized order, cutting on every descending motion and moving on every return motion. This constituted an astonishingly clever application of basic parts.”
