Israelis commemorate second remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire talks advance
People have come together around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"Our violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled state memorials until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of people killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' delegations met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the proposal.
A senior Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an evening round of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.
The source stated the morning session ended without significant progress, due to differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have still not deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Key Points in Negotiations
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
- After-conflict governance of the area
Citizen Feeling
In the city's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until each abducted person are released no one will be secure."
"After we see all home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.
Near the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Activist Atalia Regev stated: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to come back home. But we sincerely need promises that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now consistently show that about the majority of Israelis prefer the hostilities to end in exchange for the release of the abducted.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of Nova festival, grieving people assembled to remember the victims.
From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli attacks continued.
In the main city, attacks were noted in the dawn of that day in the west side neighborhood, sector and Nasr areas and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.
"When the evening arrives, the dread appears with it," relocated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.
"We are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who places his face on me all night."
"Constantly we monitor the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will resume to us."
Health Emergency
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had taken in the bodies of six people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area said two more fatalities had been brought there. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while seeking help to the south region, health workers stated.
