Meteorologists are saying an icy beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Go Ahead In Spite of Alerts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," stated the weather service.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Readings are expected to be chilly, meaning warm wraps vital, said forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

Heading into Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.

Temperatures Expected to Drop Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to plummet as snowfall and high winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Advisories Released

In addition, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this signified the weather was likely to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is completely paramount.
