Senegal's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
As I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he clings to throughout the conversation. This serves as a powerful symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his path in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and European Breakthrough
This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to victory and earning best player.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his competitive fire, after being shown red early in his spells at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals
With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Currently, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior top prize in the future.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills belief.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
