The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... At the Moment.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed series reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Does Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… in a way.
“There are some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
