The Household Personal Game of the Year Awards for 2025
Alright, how was the past year in your family? Did it seem entirely positive as people post on social media? Full of academic success for the kids and wild costume birthday parties for the grownups? Or perhaps it was a swamp of letdowns with only occasional enjoyable moments? Could any part be actually real, or is everyone now seven-fingered virtual entities with celebrity dental work?
I have gathered the family for a chat, whether they wanted to or not, to debate the most important thing in any given year: which video games we were obsessed with the most. So here goes:
Release Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Why can't you pick just one?"
"It’s not my games column."
On her phone, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "trying to find decent healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In reality."
Release Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that the question was posed. Fair enough.
Game Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into theatre school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where her avatar has a successful utopia with far better healthcare than her eldest sister has in real life.
Title the Spouse Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at 60% completion and finished the year at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Release I Teased My Kids About My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Every time I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he objects, I reply that I am engaging in this to prepare him so he can be a man and play games for grownups. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Notable Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is unstoppable. More impressive than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted strategy wizard’s poker, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The catch about games that frequently update their range is you wake up one day and see it is all just an attempt to trap you with fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Stunning reinvention of a legendary franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the off. I wish I could eviscerate my demons so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Cerebral Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just lacked the focused attention to give it what it required earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I will be playing this in the late night after family time.
Game That Kept Me Sane When I Needed It
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was last year's breakout game, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is remarkable. It just gets every single thing right. Crazy Poker is a fantastic concept, but the powers behind the different special cards are so creative it has become a game I would happily play at any hour. Add in the wittiness of the card design, and this is an definite peak of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Title I Got the Most Backlash For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a minor pile-on when I mentioned how a glitch in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I appreciated even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the individual who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I share that in the exact way, because I appreciate the effort, and he is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Fine. Give me a punishingly tough Metroidvania-esque thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". How delightful. I get that it has great art and is flawless if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my adulthood. I was around back when all games were like this, and I’ve had enough. It was okay when I was a kid, but so was many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Debate between corporate partnerships that sparked debate, and premium pricing. Both difficult to justify and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names bellowed from the back door at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or phone use, but it is sore like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the past.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the heat death of the universe.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
