The original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated that parent company Unilever blocked the introduction for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he plans to independently develop this new product within an individual series showcasing causes the company has been barred from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Dispute Between Founders and Corporate Owner

This latest development deepens the continuing tension between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

The co-founders maintain that the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Flavor as an Emblem for Support

The entrepreneur stated via social media how he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options and additional components.

“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”

This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians because of its coloration, which match those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Activism and Current Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.

This upcoming product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first established in 2016 to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Shifts plus Future Plans

The founder stated that he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever.

The announcement comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after many years of involvement, citing concerns regarding how its independence was undermined after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.

At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."

"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
