The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
